It’s one of the most persistent bridal hair myths—and it isn’t the advice we give our clients.
At Royal Makeup & Hair, we generally recommend that brides and bridal-party members wash, condition, and blow-dry their hair the night before their wedding or event.
Here’s why.
Clean Hair Doesn’t Mean Slippery Hair
The idea behind the dirty-hair recommendation isn’t completely unreasonable. Freshly washed hair can sometimes be very silky and lack the texture needed for certain hairstyles.
Professional hairstylists, however, have products specifically designed to solve that problem.
We can add texture and grip where needed with professional styling products.
What is more difficult to work around is several days of oil, product buildup, or dry shampoo sitting at the roots.
Excess oil can actually make it harder for the hair to hold a curl.
The Ideal Wedding Hair Prep Routine
Unless your stylist gives you different instructions for your particular hair type, our recommendation is simple:
The night before your wedding:
Wash your hair thoroughly, condition it, and blow-dry it completely.
Avoid going to sleep with wet hair.
On the wedding morning, arrive for your hair appointment with your hair completely dry unless you’ve specifically booked a professional blow-dry.
What If I Have Very Fine Hair?
Still wash it.
Your stylist can add the texture, volume, and hold your hair needs with professional products and styling techniques.
Knowing that your hair naturally struggles to hold curl is useful information, though. Tell your stylist during your preview and again on the wedding day.

What About Humidity?
This is especially important for our brides getting married in places such as Savannah and Charleston, where humidity can be a major factor.
Our artists use anti-humidity products and styling techniques designed to reduce frizz and improve longevity.
If your hair historically drops curls quickly, consider a more structured hairstyle. An updo generally lasts longer than completely loose curls.
For outdoor weddings, this can be particularly helpful.
Does Wedding Location Change Your Hair Prep?
Your preparation is generally the same, but environmental conditions matter.

That’s different.
If you’ve specifically booked a blow-dry before your wedding hairstyle, wash and condition your hair shortly before your appointment.
Brush it out and keep it damp for your artist’s arrival.
Remember that a blow-dry requires additional appointment time, so it should always be arranged in advance rather than requested unexpectedly on the wedding morning.
